What does this mean for the Leafs? Not much.
Toronto still owns all of their draft picks for 2016 but it’s extremely unlikely they have any interest in moving them – especially the first-third round picks – given their rebuilding status.
It doesn’t make much sense to give up a first round pick when you’re projected to be in the basement of the league again. Toronto, as everyone knows, got burned on a similar situation with the Tyler Seguin scenario – essentially an offer sheet for Kessel, only in a trade – and no one predicted they’d finish so poorly that year.
