BERKELEY — The hierarchies at most positions were already apparent for the most part. But Cal football’s first fall depth chart Tuesday made clearer the competitions at two oft-overlooked spots.
Junior Noah Beito was listed at first-team kicker, while sophomore Matt Anderson was his primary backup. At punt returner, freshman wide receiver Kanawai Noa was penciled in above two players — senior wide receivers Trevor Davis and Bryce Treggs — who have experience in that role.
Sonny Dykes called the placekicking job “neck and neck” earlier this week. Beito, who hit 2-of-4 field goals as a backup to James Langford last season, has specifically been lauded for his consistency.
